Chapter 1 “Little Hintock in Winter”
It was a cold winter evening in 1855. Most of people of Little Hintock had stopped work for the day, and they were all in their homes. It was late, but lights were shinning from the window of a few of the houses and cottages. There were trees of many in these woods-oaks, elms, ashes, hazels and many others. In the other situation, Mr. Melbury has problem which he did in the past. This something was Grace who became Melburry’s first wife was going to marry Giles Winterbourne’s father, but he married her instead. Giles father married someone else, but he was never really happy after that. After a while, Mr. Percomb wants to buy Marty’s South hair. At first, she refuses to sell it. But later, she changes her mind because Giles going to marry Grace Mulberry and she sadly.

Chapter 2 “Grace Comes Home”
Later that same morning, George Melbury met Giles Winterbourne in the lane outside Giles’ house. They often are working together. Mr. Melbury was a timber-merchant. Mr. Melbury asked Giles Winterbourne to brought grace from Sherton Abbas. He told Giles she has many new friends, but Giles worried about that because she has not forgotten her friends from Little Hintock. Besides that, Mrs Carmonds lets Marty ride on the carriage because the road was getting dark.


Chapter 3 “A new Friend”
Grace was tired after her long journey and she went to bed early, but she could not sleep. Through her window, she could see a bright blue light shining from a house on the other side of the little valley. After that, Mrs Carmond asked Graces about the doctor’s house. His named Edred Fitzpiers. And when she saw her own reflection in the mirror, she compares her face with Graces’ face. She was not happy. Furthermore, Giles talks to Marty that he wants to invite a friend to a Christmas party.    

Chapter 4 “The Party”
Giles Winterbourne was planning a big party. He invited all his friends from Little Hintock. On the morning of the party, the house was completely cleaned and lots of the food was prepared. In the middle of party, Giles was unhappy because everything was going wrong. That evening, two of the villagers were also talking about Giles Winterbourne creedle who helped Giles, was talking to a friend. After that, Mr Melbury told Grace to end her engagement to Giles.

Chapter 5 “The Writing on the Wall”
The next morning, Giles Winterbourne took from his desk all the legal papers about the leases on his house and the South’s cottage. He read the paper carefully. After that, Giles worried about his house because he got not good news from Mrs Charmond lawyer she is going to have his house pulled down. Besides that, John South died and doctor Fitzpiers said that he did best to help him.

Chapter 6 “Pity is not Love”
Doctor Fizpiers was a little afraid of the woodlands. He was not a woodlander; he came from a big town. He did not like to drive through the woods when it was dark.  After that, Giles talked about Grace. Between of them to asked about the feeling to Grace each other, but pity is not love said Fitzpiers when Grace came of the woodlands to take her purse left in woods, a few ago.

Chapter 7 “Midsummer’s Eve”
It was Midsummer’s Eve – the day before the longest day of the year. In the woodland, the leaves were thick and green on the trees. And by this time, Edred Fitzpiers was sure that he was in love with Grace. Every year, at midnight on Midsummer’s Eve the village girls, laughing and talking, were walking along a little path toward the darkest part of the woods. In other situation Grace knew that Fitzpiers was clever, but she did not like some of his ideas that a quite registry office would be a much better place to celebrate get married between of them.  

Chapter 8 “Marriage”
That night, Grace could not sleep. She was worried. The next morning, she got up very early and she looked out of her bedroom window. Everything was quite. She looked at the houses and cottages, at the woods and orchards. Then she looked at the house on the little hill where Edred Fitzpiers lived. At that moment, Grace had seen the woman clearly from the village came to Fitzpiers because she had a terrible toothache. Then Grace very jealous, but he explained that she just a patient to checked her healthy to me and Grace believed his story. But long before that, Fitzpiers and Grace had married in August in Little Hintock.

Chapter 9 “Two Friends Meet Again”
Fitzpiers soon arrived at Hintock House, and a servant took him into a pleasant sitting-room. Mrs Charmond was sitting on a couch. Her beautiful thick hair was shiny in the light of a small lamp. She looked up at the handsome young doctor and smiled. She said that, we are met again. In Germany, you were studying and Mrs Charmond was there with my mother. They all stayed in the same hotel. She loved him, but after she knew about his situation that Fitzpiers get married with grace, she sadly. And then, a day or two later, Mrs Charmond left Little Hintock house and she went to Middleton Abbey.

Chapter 10 “Mrs Carmond”
Winter had come to the woodlands again. This winter, Mrs Charmond had not gone abroad. She had returned from Middleton Abbey and she was lived at Hintock House again. At nine o’clock the next morning, Mr Melbury came to Mrs Charmond house to curse her and to remind stop meeting with my son-in-law because Mrs Charmond made his daughter, Grace unhappy. After that, Marty gives Fitzpiers a letter which told him about the reality of Mrs Charmond’s hair because Mrs Charmond wore a hair-piece that was made from her hair.
Chapter 11 “Bad News”
Felice Charmond was sitting alone in Hintock House. It was very late in the evening. In 1857, a divorce law had been passed in England. This law said that some people who were unhappily married would be able to get divorced. After that, Mr Mulbery said to Giles about the law and it helps his daughter. Grace said to Giles she will be free, soon. And the bad news was the new law is not for country people like us, said Mr Mulbery.

Chapter 12 “The Cottage in the Woods”
For the next three months, life in the woodland went on as usual, but Grace and Giles did not meet each other. Then, one day, Grace received a letter her husband. Edred said that to meet Grace on Saturday in Budmouth. And a minute, she left house by the back door to meet Giles. She does not know if Giles was very ill and he needed a doctor. And the nearest doctor was Grace’s husband Edred Fitzpiers. After that, he cannot help Giles. He is dying and he has been ill for a long time, so he is very weak. Grace sadly after she know the situation.

Chapter 13 “Afterward”
A few days later, Grace became ill. She had thought that she wanted to die. But now, suddenly, she wanted to live. She took Fitzpiers’ medicine and slowly she got better. So autumn passed and winter came. In February 1858, Grace received a letter from her husband. He wants to meet her and Grace agreed to meet her husband in Sherton Abbas because the reason that she wanted something which injured Giles’ fell before his death. At the end the story, Marty South is alone at Giles’ grave and she said you were good man and you did good things.

Chapter 1 “Anthony Patch in New York”
It was a sunny October in 1913. Anthony Patch was happy to be in New York again. Anthony will be rich, because he is the only one as inherit from his grandfather. Adam Patch wants Anthony to do work. It was fine apartments. It cost a lot of money. The money came from what his mother and left him when she died. He had income of seven thousand dollars a years.  

Chapter 2 “Gloria”
A month later it was winter in New York. Anthony met Dick Caramel again, walking along 42nd Street. After that Dick introduced Anthony with his cousin named Gloria Gilbert, the girl who is beautiful with golden hair. She was used to dance all the afternoon and all night too. She liked lazy men and she happy when she met people was the same as her. 

Chapter 3 “At the Biltmore”
It was the night of Gloria’s party. Anthony, dick and Joseph Bloeckman were at the Biltmore at eight o’clock. Joseph Bloeckman was a heavy man of about thirty-five. At that moment, Gloria and Anthony dance together, but Joseph did not dance and watched the others. At ten o’clock, Gloria and Anthony dancing again. Then something happened that Anthony remembered years afterwards. Joseph Bloeckman looked at Anthony in a strange way in long time. But he said nothing and he did not look at Gloria at all.

Chapter 4 “Goodbye Anthony....”
It was ten o’clock on Sunday morning. Anthony was sitting in his apartment, thinking about Gloria. Anthony and Gloria had a strong feeling of love. They loved each other. An hour passed and the clock struck five. He held her tightly. He kissed her again, but Gloria does not like it. For over a minute, Gloria made no sound. Then she whispered to the fire “Goodbye Anthony – you idiot.”

Chapter 5 “Anthony in Love”
Anthony was in love. He knew what he wanted. He wanted Gloria, but she had sent him away. He had lost her. Without Gloria, Anthony knew that his life was worth nothing. At six o’clock, they went out to Fifth Avenue. Anthony told Gloria that he loved her. After that, they held each other in a long, loving embrace.

Chapter 6 “The Wedding”
Anthony and Gloria decided to marry in June. They both love another. Gloria’s mother was surprised, but pleased. Adam Patch said that “so you spent every penny on yourself and you had decided that you had not enough money for two.” Anthony became angry after his grandfather said that. Adam Patch also gives advised that Anthony should think about the future too and ought to get job – work harder.  

Chapter 7 “The Little Grey House”
The first six months of their marriage was the happiest time they would ever know. Then, hour by hour, the dream began to fade. Gloria had a temper. Anthony discussed with Dick where they should live, so they left New York in the morning in a cheap, new car. After that, they a rent house for a year. They stayed the night at Marietta Inn in the little grey house.

Chapter 8 “I Hate you! I Hate you!”
The car was repaired by Anthony and Gloria drove around everywhere. They went out to dances. In November, they went back to Anthony’s apartment for the winter. In April, they went to California. Anthony had been drinking whisky all day. The impact of he started to drink more, and more was the quarrel happen. Soon after this quarrel, Anthony went to see his grandfather. Adam Pitch asked Anthony went to Europe and Gloria disagree about it. About a week later, Joseph to invite Gloria to be a film star, but Anthony glared at Gloria. Finally, they both sat down to write letters. Anthony’s letter was to his grandfather and Gloria’s letter was to letter was to Joseph. They had both decided, as usual, to do nothing.

Chapter 9 “The Party”
Gloria woke up. For a time, she did not know where she was. Then she heard Anthony breathing heavily beside her. She could smell whisky and cigarette smoke. He becomes poor man, in March he had taken a salesman. He hated the work, so he left the job. For third year, they sold his apartment and rent grey house. The weekend party all the same – drinks, dinner at club, then more drinking. Adam Patch hated drink and drunkenness more than anything else in the world. He died in November. Anthony and Gloria went to the funeral. Then they waited to hear how much money Adam Patch left them in his will, but they had nothing said the lawyer’s Adam Patch.   

Chapter 10 “Oh, My Gloria!”
The next day, Anthony went to a lawyer. He wanted to fight grandfather’s will. Lawyer said that the reason Adam Patch had not left Anthony anything in his will because he hated people drinking and enjoying a noisy party. Gloria was twenty-six, but she looked twenty. Both Anthony and Gloria tried to spend less money, but it was impossible for them. In April 1917, Anthony tried to join the army in America declared war. While, Gloria going into the movies. Ten days later, Anthony left the army and back to live in New York.  

Chapter 11 “Oh, My Pretty Face”
And now it was the end of February. As Anthony came into the little apartment, Gloria turned away from the window. Anthony got another job as a salesman, but he did not keep the job because he had to have a drink or two before he could sell anything. Seven days before her twenty-nine, he phoned Joseph to join tested in his studio without told Anthony until she got the part. Unfortunately, she did not except because she included the older woman.

Chapter 12 “No Love, No Money”
A year later, Gloria and Anthony had moved into a cheaper apartment. Anthony was thirty-two. His mind was slow. His eyes, that had been a deep, clear blue, were now red and weak. Anthony was drunk most of the time. He became crazy because he had not money to his life and also his wife. Gloria complained all the time for the conditions of her husband.

Chapter 13 “We’ve Won!”
Three weeks later, the case of Adam Patch’s will come to end. It was cold morning in March. A decision was going to given that afternoon. Anthony saw his face in the mirror, that he was thirty-three, but he looked fifty. Gloria and Dick saw Anthony in his bedroom. He was sitting on the floor and he laughed softly as the stamps fell silently to the floor.

Epilogue
The big liner was slowly crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The weather was warm and many passengers were walking on the deck. Only a few months ago, everyone had been telling Anthony to forget the case and to go to work and he did not give up.
