LOVE STORY – Erich Segal

Love story is a book about 2 people (Oliver Barrett IV & Jennifer Cavilleri) who are truly deeply & madly in love with each other. Oliver Barret IV is a student of Harvard University, rich and smart man while Jenny is a Radcliffe student, an American of Italian descent, poor and smart student. Oliver is in his last year at Harvard College when he met Jenny. They meet in Radcliff Library where Jenny is studying music.

Oliver Barret grows up with the attitude parents that stiff and discipline. So the consequently his relationship with his father is very stiff. He even calls his father “Stony Face “because he feels his father never shows his affections. The attitude of rebellion to his father makes him a harsh and likes to fight when he is playing ice hockey. In contrast, Jennifer grows up without her mother. She has a good relationship with her father. But her father is a baker, that’s really contrast with the social class of Oliver’s family.

Slowly but sure, Oliver & Jennifer fall in love with each other. One day, Jenny tells Oliver that she has a chance to study music in Paris. Oliver does not want her to go, so he asks her to marry him. Jenny accepts his asking. After lots of sacrifices they decide to get married. Oliver and Jenny visit Oliver’s parents. Mr. Barret disagrees with their relationship because Jenny is a poor girl. He tells Oliver not to marry until he has finished law school. Otherwise he will no longer support Oliver financially. Oliver is angry with his father.

After that they try to ask the permission to the Jenny’s dad. Oliver is afraid that his visit to Jenny’s father will not be a success thing. He has no money now because his father disagrees with their relationship. But Jenny’s father, Phill, is very kind man and doesn’t care about the status of Oliver now.

He married Jennifer while he is finishing his law degree. Jennifer takes some jobs to support their small family. But after graduation, he gets great offers from law firms in New York. He takes that job because they offer high salary for him. Their social life begins changing.

One day, Oliver & Jennifer go to the hospital to know the reason why they don’t have a child yet. A few days later, the doctor calls Oliver to come in his office to tell him that Jenny has Leukemia and soon will die. Oliver doesn’t want to tell Jenny about the truth. Oliver tries everything to make her happy & content in life. He buys the tickets to go to Paris because he knows that Jenny really want to go there. Unbelievable, Jenny doesn’t want to go there because she has known her illness. She wants to live life as normally as possible and has much time with Oliver in her rest life.

Jenny asks Oliver to deliver her to go to hospital when her condition is going to be worse. Oliver visits his father to lend him five thousand dollars. He needs that money to pay Jenny’s hospital bills, but Oliver doesn’t tell that problem to his father. Then Oliver tells Phill, Jenny’s father, about Jenny’s illness. Then Jenny tells her father that she wants a Catholic funeral. Jenny asks Oliver to hug her strongly and she says her thanks to him. That’s her last word. Jenny died in Oliver’s arms.

Oliver’s father comes in that hospital. He says that he has just known of Jenny’s illness and wants to help her. Then Oliver tells that Jenny has died. Oliver’s father says his sorry. Then Oliver repeats Jenny’s word “love means not having to say that you’re sorry” Oliver cried in his father’s arm for the first time.
